Reblogged from Cat's Books: Romance :

I actually don't read romance novels for the sex.  LOL. I swear. I like the sex. A lot. But I read romance novels for the psychology of all kinds of relationships and for the world building and for the happily ever afters.  Oh, and love.

What happily ever after means to me is that no matter what goes down in that book, its going to be all right at close of cover. Its fiction and I enjoy that.

I do love me some good sexy times as well. Good sex in a romance novel is grand. I like all kinds of stream levels and have adored a close door romance as much any erotica.

My favorite kinds of sex scenes are those that feel possible, emotionial and real.

I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorites romances with this kind of sensuality.

First a list of love stories with great make out and kissing scenes,  the couples slowly round the bases...

1. Dragos Takes A Holiday (A Novella of the Elder Races) by Thea Harrison

2. Scandal by Amanda Quick

3. The Sweetest Thing, Simply Irresistible and  Forever and a Day  by Jill Shalvis

4. The Reluctant Nerd by Sandra Paul

5. Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas

6. Dangerous Curves Ahead by Sugar Jamison

7. Kiss the BrideThe Chocolate Thief,  and The Chocolate Rose by Laura Florand

8. Live and The Story Guy (Novella) by  Mary Ann Rivers

9. Big Boy by Ruthie Knox

10. Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

Moving beyond kissing...

My favorite romances with emotional and real sex scenes:

1. Get Lucky by Suzanne  Brockmann

 2. Marrying the Royal Marine by Carla Kelly

3. Whisper Falls: A Destiny Novel by Toni Blake

4. Hearts and Swords by Robin Owens

5. Slightly Dangerous by Mary Balogh

6. Yours To Keep (The Kowalskis) by Shannon Stacey

7. Vision In White by Nora Roberts

8. What the Librarian Did by Karina Bliss

9. STRANDED! by Pepper Pace

10. Sheltered by Charlotte Stein

I could list every Laura Florand book here and every Ruthie Knox book but I won't. I can restrain. Sometimes.

So, what are your favorite sexy scenes? Kissing? Making out? Touching love scenes? The flirt? Gimme!

If you would like to vote for the best of the best, I have two Goodreads lists for you! Making Love: Best Real and Emotional Sexy Times in Romance Novels and Steaming Up the Windows: Best Make Out and Kiss Scenes in Romance Novels.

FRANKENSTEIN

Reblogged from chadschimke:
Frankenstein - Mary Shelley, Maurice Hindle
FRANKENSTEIN - This horror story has elements of mystery, supernatural, a gloomy setting and a character that bridges the worlds of the living and undead. The result is arguably the most identified classic gothic novel. The genesis of Frankenstein came to Mary Shelley in a dream. She was a part of a group visiting Lord Byron (poet of the romantic movement) confined to a villa remaining indoors due to incessant rain. He issued the famous challenge to write a horror story, which ultimately led to Frankenstein and John Polidori writing The Vampyre. Percy Bysshe Shelley was in the villa also, a prominent romantic poet in his own right, as well as Mary’s husband. I am particularly fond of the 1931 film version starring Boris Karloff. Don’t be put off by the movie era or black and white format. This was a pre-code film that didn’t flinch from controversial content. The pace is quick, black/ white reinforces the tone, utilizes stark visual imagery and pioneering movie effects/ sets. This is a classic Universal Pictures monster flick in an era where no other studio could have done it better. Not to be missed!

The African Queen in Outer Space? #SciRom

The African Queen in Outer Space?

A guest post by Edward Hoornaert:

My upcoming science fiction romance, Escapee, is coming out on April 19. What inspired me to write the book?

The 1951 movie, The African Queen. My version is set on an inhospitable moon, rather than the African Jungle, but in both tales the hero and heroine battle nature and, ultimately, the invading enemy.

How did I transform a movie into a science fiction romance?

Analyzing the movie

I rented the movie and looked for two things:

  • Stages -- Charley and Rosie's relationship go through a number of stages.
  • Turning points -- The events that caused their relationship to change from one stage to another.

I then devised analogous stages and turning points for Escapee. Here are a few of them, so you get the feel for how the analysis worked.

Stage 1:  Polite disconnect between hero and heroine.

  • AQ -- Rosie, a missionary in German East Africa, disapproves of Charley, a crude freighter captain who brings supplies, but treats him with chilly politeness.
  • Escapee -- Hector, a stuffy career army officer, disapproves of the freewheeling, lower-class airship pilot, Cattaroon who supplies his base.

Turning point:  The enemy invades. In AQ, it's the Germans, who leave Rosie alone and stranded -- until Charley comes by and saves her.

In Escapee, it's humans from the Proxima system. While Hector's on leave, they destroy his entire command, leaving him stranded and alone -- until Catt lands, looking for survivors.

Stage 2:  Rosie devises a near-impossible goal that he doesn't agree with.

  • AQ -- Rosie's wants to attack a German warship. Charley agrees, knowing she'll give up when she learns how dangerous the river is.
  • Escapee -- Hector wants to attack enemy headquarters. Catt agrees only because she's certain he'll give up when he realizes how dangerous a flight across the moon is.

So far the two stories are similar. Now they start to diverge, though the skeleton remains the same.

Turning point:  When mild danger fails to deter her from her purpose, his true feelings come out explosively.

  • In AQ, after shooting rapids doesn't deter Rosie, Charley gets drunk and insults Rosie. She dumps out all his rum.
  • In Escapee, after getting caught in a volcano's updraft doesn't deter Hector, Catt sabotages a cannon stored in the airship's hold.

Stage 3:  Futile attempts to rebuild a civil relationship.

  • AQ -- Charley apologizes for insulting her, but she won't accept his apology unless he agrees to take her to the Germans' ship.
  • Escapee -- With the cannon gone, Hector realizes how futile his quest is. Feeling guilty, Catt tries to be nice, but he's too depressed to talk about it.

Turning point:  He agrees to share her goal.

In AQ, Charley's (deeply buried!) chivalry makes him give in.

In Escapee, Catt remembers all the friends whom the enemy has killed. Hearing her cry during the night, Hector finally talks, voicing his idealistic reasons for wanting to fight. Inspired by his idealism, Catt agrees to make the dangerous voyage to the other side of the moon.

Stage 4:  Falling in love

Etc, etc.

"Inspired By", Not a Ripoff

This post is getting long, so I won't bore you with all six stages, but hopefully you get the general idea. Analyzing the movie turned out to be a huge help in developing my plot. You ought to try it some time.

I'd like to emphasize that Escapee ended up having a different feel than the movie. Here are some of the key differences:

  • Although both environments are hostile, they're different -- river rapids vs. hurricanes and volcanoes.
  • The characters’ genders are reversed. Their wounds are very different, as are the lessons they need to learn.
  • I added secondary characters. They capture an enemy who tries to sabotage the airship. Hector has an alien pet that is ugly/lovable. Finally, Catt's android co-pilot provides comic relief as well as the book's most poignant scene, when he dies.
  • The ending is more believable, IMHO. AQ's ending requires an act of God (a rainstorm that floats their grounded boat) and a wild coincidence (their sunken boat nonetheless sinks the German ship). Escapee has a logical ending.

What's It to You?

If you have a favorite movie you love, you might want to turn it into a book of your own. If so, consider analyzing it for stages and turning points.

What movie would you like to turn into an "inspired by" novel? Tell us about it in the comments.

The Mexican Mafia of The Nightlife San Antonio #Mafia #Cartel #Vampires

In writing The Nightlife San Antonio, I was inspired by events in my life from 2005 through 2010, when I lived in Sonora Mexico, on the border of Arizona. At this time the border situation was red hot. By 2007, every week brought a new headline of the escalating drug war in the border towns that often spilled over onto U.S. soil.  Though our small town of Agua Prieta, Sonora didn’t see any major conflict, I noticed the camouflage-painted tanks cruising through the scrub brush in the countryside, patrolling the line. Yes, tanks, and camouflaged military soldiers with assault rifles. I had never seen this kind of thing in the U.S., actual military occupation. This was interesting, but the incident that really brought the border conflicts to my attention was the assassination of the Commandante of Agua Prieta, known as “Tacho.”

The Commandante, the chief of police, is like the sheriff of the municipality. I saw the Commandante’s Jeep after the shooting. The windows of Tacho’s vehicle had been reinforced with inch-thick bulletproof glass, and would have saved his life, if he could have closed the door. The bullet holes I saw were in the interior of the door.  He’d been standing in the open door of the Jeep when they attacked with automatic assault rifles. Tacho was killed in the parking lot of the police station, in broad daylight. Rumor was he’d been taking cartel payoffs for years, but, his cooperation wasn’t satisfactory anymore. The cartels had made a bold statement, an example, one of many cartel assassinations in those years.

Don’t fuck with the Mexican cartels, not if you value your life, or the lives of your family.

About a third of the Agua Prieta police force quit their jobs. New officers were brought in from all over Sonora. Most of the locals were too afraid to take the job. Police in border towns everywhere experienced tremendous pressure and constant threats.

The manhunt for Tacho’s killers went on for months, but the cartel assassins escaped and were never caught. This kind of violence against police and authorities hit both sides of the border, yet it was far worse in Texas and California. Arizona experienced only a fraction of the drug wars that Tijuana/San Diego and Ciudad Juarez/El Paso suffered.

The catalyst of this war was the new President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, who had made the cartels his number one target. Across Mexico and the U.S., joint task forces of DEA and Mexican federal military worked in concert to hunt down these powerful cartels. Their efforts may have slowed the flow of drugs, but certainly didn’t stop it. They created a vicious, bloody war that lead to hundreds of prosecutions and incarcerations. The U.S. federal prisons are now filled with Mexican cartel members.  These men are trapped for 10-20 years or more, but they’re still deeply entrenched in cartel connections, with powerful family ties in Mexico.

Now comes the Mexican Mafia, a gang born on American soil, recruited from the convicts inside the prisons. Cartel members doing a life sentence are out of action, but the other inmates with 1-2-3 years before release are ripe for training. These parolees hit the ground running, drugs, cash and guns handed to them as soon as they set foot on the streets. The cartels found new life and distribution channels through the prison-based Mexican Mafia gang.

In 2010, La Eme – “M” – short for Mexican Mafia, battled with other gangs over control of the streets of San Antonio. Law enforcement joined the battle and took out huge chunks of gang membership with massive conspiracy indictments and arrests. Still, La Eme thrives. As many people as are thrown in prison for gang-drug activity, there’s always a new crop being released, newly trained and ready to go into business.

U.S. prisons are the breeding ground for La Eme gang membership. Members wear distinctive tattoos of a black handprint with the letters E M E, or, something derivative of the Mexican flag, the Eagle and the Snake.

It was years later, 2012, when I moved to San Antonio. I had missed most of the excitement. But, my years spent in living in Mexico stayed with me to this day, vivid memories of things I may never comfortably admit to. As you read my macabre, perverse tales of mafia, corruption, cartel, and vampires, it’s obvious I have some intimate knowledge of these things. Did I learn from jovial conversations with men whose tongues were loosened by tequila and lime, or do I have a story of my own to tell?

I’m not quite prepared to answer that question today. Maybe someday when I’m old and grey, and it just doesn’t matter anymore. For now, enjoy my tales of chaos, mayhem and debauchery, and take it on faith that I know what I’m talking about.

A mortal woman who would dare fall in love with a god.

In writing my latest novel, a paranormal scifi-romance, Upon This Rock, I delved into the vast treasure trove of myth, legend and various religions to find inspiration. The premise was relatively simple, a mortal woman, courted and seduced by a god in her nightly dreams, would do anything to meet her lover in person. She would journey to the ends of the Earth for her loving devotion...

Perhaps even the Vatican.

The idea of gods, angels and demons seducing mortal women is embedded in every mythology across human history. What does that say about women ... that they are such ripe targets for seduction and rape? What does that say about the predatory natures of these gods?

Hindu gods seduced and impregnated mortals, as did Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Greek and Roman gods. Zues's many lovers (mortal and otherwise) are so well known, the moons of Jupiter are named after them.

And what would be the result of such a union?

Demigods.

Demigods are some of the most famous and infamous characters of lore.

In Judeo-Christian myth, the Old Testament (Torah) has a peculiar line about The Nephilim...

"The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, when the sons of God came unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them; the same were the mighty men of old, the men of renown."

Sounds a lot like a Demigod by Greco-Roman definitions.

Sadly, the Demigods had it rough. They were mostly human, imbued with special abilities from their divine parentage, but mired in the mess of humanity and forever struggling against the manipulations of gods who used them to further their selfish agendas.

Thousands of years have passed since the days of Nephilim and Demigods, the days when gods, angels and demons walked among us, seducing women, and birthing supernaturally gifted half-breeds.

Herein lies the thread of my novel, UPON THIS ROCK.

What if the Gods sought to reenter our world, to once more seduce women and regain political and religious favor among the nations of men? Ashley Rowan is lured in by the loving, patient whispers of Mithra. He promises they can be together, if only she accepts his gifts of power and journeys to the gate, to open the way to his world.

Mithra has labored for centuries to reach this moment, the chance for gods to once more walk among the men and women of Earth.

Its Fantasy. Scifi. Mythical and legendary, encompassing thousands of years of human history, and the dark manipulations of supernatural creatures from other worlds across the galaxy. They await us at the door, ready to barge through the gateway hidden beneath the Vatican ... UPON THIS ROCK.

Upon This Rock (Myth and Legend, Fantasy Romance, Scifi Romance) - Travis Luedke

Upon This Rock (Upon This Rock, #1)

Beneath the Vatican lies a gateway to other worlds, closed for millennia. Mithra has labored for centuries to reach across the aether and connect with a human carrying the ancient genetic markers needed to wield the key and open the sealed gate.

"Your patience is rewarded. I crossed rivers of time and space for you."

Ashley Rowan has no one in her life but the voice in her head, the warm, sultry whispers of Mithra that haunt her dreams. He promises they will be united once she accepts his devastating gifts of
power.

"Pledge absolute devotion to me and I promise you the key to the universe."

Empowered by Mithra and aided by Urvashi – a fallen angel – Ashley must embrace her destiny as the gatekeeper before Mithra's enemies take control of her and the gate. Many factions vie for access, but Mithra vows to protect Ashley at any cost, even if it means a war between worlds.

"I once believed demons were a psychosis of the mind. Now I see they walk and talk, bearing wings of polished steel dipped in the blood of sinners."

Greco Roman gods and demonic creatures collide in this mythical fantasy and scifi romance series from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Travis Luedke.

Join Ashley for an insane dark fantasy thrill ride to the Vatican secret archives and the underworld of the Necropolis to find a doorway to the universe UPON THIS ROCK.

My Review:

I really have to give Luedke credit for how creative he's gotten with his writing. The sheer expanse and detail has been absolutely fantastic, what's better are the cameo's we get.

Its brilliance to bring in favorites into new installments because we already have a cast and author that we love and now we get a new complex world with that added bonus.

I can't even sum up the size of genre cross and mix of players because Luedke opens a box of characters that keep you guessing and investing from beginning to end.

I wish I could put into words just how much I'm loving the start of this series and honestly wish it had been longer because -gr... cliffhanger/hangover. I want more.

The whole can you trust the unknown and jump without the assurance of a safety net into the relationships both in friendships and intimate involvements pays off in a big way.

You don't have to pick up the previous books to understand involvements because Luedke makes it easy for new readers to his books to find their way but I would totally recommend you do because his works are fantastic to fall in love with.

Hunted By Treaty (Alien Shapeshifter Romance) (Qui Treaty Collection Book 3) - Kayla Stonor, Travis Luedke

I received a free advance review copy from Kayla in exchange for your honest review.

I'm not really sure how Kayla does it... but OMFG WOW.... I LOVED IT! 'Hunted by Treaty' sucked me into Raiss' (LOVE the name) time on the run from his K'lahn captures, how he landed on a planet run by human survivors. Crendea a half K'lahn half human women, helps Raiss flee the Qui... but Raiss helps Crendea... a bond forms...

If you haven't read the first couple of books in the "Qui Treaty Collection" then I reccommend you go & read them first, in order... you wont regrett picking them up. I'm loving the whole Space Opera genre at the moment. I can't wait for the next book in the collection, bring it Kayla!

I can't get enough of Angel

Reblogged from kristyheinicke:
Angel 6.0: Enslaved (Space Opera Romance): (Angel 6.0, Book 3) - Travis Luedke

'Angel 6.0: Salvage' starts just after 'Angel 6.0: Escape' finished, I do suggest you read this series in order, starting with 'Concubine'. You wont be dissapointed!

This book was a little slower than the previous 2, I think Travis was giving us a breather in the form of Angel learning more of the intricut lives of The Gran. Although it was slower in action & sex... I found myself still gripped by the book & craving more once I hit the last word. How does Travis do this?? Keep us in suspense about what is going to happen next, whilst giving us a book that is so dark, twisted & absolutely f*#@ed up? I AM HOOKED!! Bring on the next installment of Angel's story, I'm not sure I could ever get enough.

HOT new series from Travis

Reblogged from kristyheinicke:
Angel 6.0: Concubine - Travis Luedke

Travis starts his new series off with a BANG!! If you've read Travis' Nightlife series you know what to expect from his work, dark, erotic, paranormals, intense.... Well you wont be dissapointed with 'Angel 6.0: Concubine'....

Set in the future, in a cloning base orbiting Earth, where cloned worker humans are produced for a war like race of alien Cats known as The Gran, lives Angel. Angel isn't a worker clone, she's a secret, Unique, not even the govenment on Earth knows about her. But when she's seen by The Gran when they arrive early to pick up there worker clones, Angel's life is ultered.

This is just the begining of Angels life, her story so far has been everything you can expect from Travis, taking us on a dark, steamy & twisted journey. It gripped me from start till finish & I was disappointed when I got to the end, I want to read more Angel now... I can't wait to read book 2 of this new series.

Wicked start to a new series

Release By Treaty - Travis Luedke, Kayla Stonor

I received a free advance review copy from the author in exchange for your honest review.

Oh WOW, this is my first book that I've read from Kayla & let me just say I was blown away! 'Release by Treaty' was fast paced & full of sexual tension. It was very easy to read in 1 sitting & although it was a quick read, I really enjoyed the flow of the story & can't wait to read the next book in the series or anything else written by Kayla.

Fast paced Vamp action

Reblogged from kristyheinicke:
The Nightlife Moscow - Travis Luedke

This is the first book I've read from Travis, but it wont be the last, that's for sure. This is book 5 in the Nightlife Series, I would recommend reading the series in order, although starting at book 5 probably wasn't the best thing to do for me, I still understood roughly what was going on. Oh & I'll be making sure I read the first 4 books A.S.A.P!!

This book never slows down, from the steaming HOT beginning to the harsh reality at the end. Vampires, wolfs, fallen angels, Russian Mafia, gun fits, explosions.... what more can one want??? Once I started this book I couldn't put it down, I finished at 4am this morning, so have a slight book hangover today.

Thank you Mr. Luedke, I look forward to more of the series & any of your other work.

The Long Way Down ~ A Guilty Pleasure of Dark Fiction, an Urban Fantasy Review

The Long Way Down (Daniel Faust #1)
by Craig Shaefer

Goodreads  http://ow.ly/GMAd0

Nobody knows the seedy underbelly of Las Vegas like Daniel Faust, a sorcerer for hire and ex-gangster who uses black magic and bullets to solve his clients' problems. When an old man comes seeking vengeance for his murdered granddaughter, what looks like a simple job quickly spirals out of control.

Soon Daniel stands in the crossfire between a murderous porn director; a corrupt cop with a quick trigger finger; and his own former employer, a racket boss who isn't entirely human. Then there's Caitlin: brilliant, beautiful, and the lethal right hand of a demon prince.

A man named Faust should know what happens when you rub shoulders with demons. Still Daniel can't resist being drawn to Caitlin's flame as they race to unlock the secret of the Etruscan Box, a relic that people all over town are dying -- and killing -- to get their hands on. As the bodies drop and the double-crosses pile up, Daniel will need every shred of his wits, courage and sheer ruthlessness just to survive.

Daniel Faust knew he was standing with one foot over the brink of hell. He's about to find out just how far he can fall.

THE REVIEW★★★★★

As a fan of dark fiction from the likes of Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, and Jim Butcher, this novel was precisely the kind of book I get into. I found all my favorites within these pages.

Daniel Faust is a gifted sorcerer with a dark, violent, troubled past and a knack for biting off more than he can chew as a private investigator. Faust's character walks on the perpetual crumbling edge of hell, often doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, and makes for such wonderful dark fiction reading. Craig Schaefer struck a genius balance of the ever-darkening grey moral fiber of Daniel Faust, a man who just might surprise you when he does the right thing once in a while.

Faust faces corrupt cops, half-demon mobsters, sorcerers delving in the blackest of magics, a pornographer with a succubus on a leash, a well-organized group of religious fanatics, and steps squarely in between the forces of heaven and hell to avert apocalypse -- with nothing more than a few cards up his sleeve ... and his friends, of course.

Faust's friends are the oddest bunch of conjurers and sorcerers ever assembled at a Vegas convention. Faust's new girlfriend pulls his ass out of the fire a few times, but dating The Hound of Hell has its consequences.

Fans of paranormal suspense, horror, thriller, urban fantasy, or dark fantasy will be glad they found a new series to enjoy with Daniel Faust.

Praise for The Nightlife Series:

“Fast paced, no holds-barred, gripping, gut-wrenching, soul-ripping and most definitely tear-inducing. Perfection!”
“You know when you see a violent or bloody scene in a movie and you cover your eyes for a couple of seconds until it has past? I caught myself doing that with this book, then I realized that the lines were not going to go away until I read them.”
“I love that we have strippers, prostitutes, sluts, and Mr. Luedke is unapologetic about it...Nightlife gives it to us in spades.”
“Mr. Luedke once again showcasing his considerable talent for crafting erotic, action-packed, supernatural thrillers that leave the reader saying “Wow!”
“A no-holds-barred, easy-to-read romp that mixes fantasy, suspense, horror and erotica, and does it well.”

THE BLURB:

Craig Lockman...

No one had called him that in fifteen years.

Not since his days at the Agency. Not since he was trained to kill creatures that were supposed to exist only in nightmares.

Yet the teenage girl on his doorstep not only knows his real name, she claims she's his daughter.

Before Lockman can learn how the girl found him, he's attacked by a black-ops team of assassins. But these aren't ordinary killers--they're heavily armed vampires sent by his most hated enemy.

Forced on the run, Lockman protects his daughter from an onslaught of horrors while searching for who betrayed him and why. The investigation leads him to Detroit, where he unwittingly sets a plan into motion that could trigger a paranormal apocalypse and cost him his soul.

Darker Things presents a new breed of urban fantasy, paced like a thriller and filled with gritty action. "Imagine if James Patterson wrote about vampires." -- Will Entrekin, author of The Prodigal Hour.

THE REVIEW:  ★★★★★

Craig Lockman is a man with a dark wicked past he thought he'd left behind. When the daughter he never knew existed comes knocking, she unwittingly brings the darkness straight to his doorstep.

The race for survival is on. Craig must figure out who gave up his location and why, while trying to protect his trouble-making daughter from the marauding vampires, werewolves and other nasties that are hunting them both. Lockman's nemesis wants him alive, and he has powerful supernatural allies to ensure he gets his man.

This is a fast-paced dark urban fantasy thriller filled with paranormal suspense and in-your-face action sequences. Lockman must balance his violent tendencies and badassary with this new strange dynamic in his life, his growing love for his daughter.

Reminiscent of Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, and all my old-school horror favorites, Darker Things is a phenomenal start to a dark fiction series. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment, Dark Legion, Book 2 in the Lockman Chronicles.

Luckily Darker Things is also available through the holidays in a kickass box set of dark fantasy and paranormal suspense, THE SHADOW BOX:
